A one day workshop on traditional and modern etching techniques using zinc plates and copper sulphate. Participants will learn how to prepare their plates, apply a hard ground, transfer their image, and then ink and print their image. We will also explore chine-colle to add colour to the images. This is achieved using delicate paper, such as Japanese paper, placing it on the inked plate and running it through the press to bond the collé paper to the print. By the end of the course everyone should have created a zinc plate with an image and have printed it intaglio ready for framing.

Etching is a rich medium where an image is scratched, drawn or painted onto a metal plate and the image etched into the plate. A range of marks can be created and, after etching, ink is applied to the plate. A print is created by placing dampened paper onto the plate and passing both through a press.

About your tutor: Amanda Donohue studied printmaking at Sydney College of the Arts graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours). She has been a printmaker for over twenty years, specialising in etching but also interested in lino, dry point, screen printing and collagraphs.
